Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI detection work?

Vault uses advanced ONNX machine learning models that run 100% on your device:

  • AI models are bundled with the app (~40 MB)
  • Processing uses Apple's Neural Engine for hardware acceleration
  • No internet connection required for scanning
  • Your photos never leave your device

All analysis happens locally on your iPhone. Zero photos are uploaded anywhere, ever.

Want to understand the math? See: How the AI Actually Works and Understanding Confidence Scores.

Are my photos stored anywhere?

No, absolutely not. This is the core privacy promise:

  • All AI processing happens on your device
  • No photos are ever uploaded to any server
  • The app stores metadata about your photos (what the AI found) -- not the photos themselves
  • Detection results stay only on your device
  • We have zero access to your photos

Why does the app need photo library access?

Vault needs access to your photo library to scan photos locally. iOS requires this permission for any app that works with photos. However:

  • You control which photos to scan
  • Processing happens entirely on your device
  • We never upload or transmit any photos
  • You can revoke access anytime in iOS Settings

How do I hide detected photos?

Essentials and Bundle subscribers can hide photos to iOS's built-in Hidden album:

  1. Scan your photos to detect sensitive content
  2. Review the detected photos
  3. Select photos you want to hide
  4. Tap "Hide" to move them to iOS Hidden album

Hidden photos are protected by Face ID / Touch ID in iOS Settings.

How do I cancel my subscription?

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone
  2. Tap your name at the top
  3. Tap Subscriptions
  4. Select Vault
  5. Tap Cancel Subscription

Your subscription stays active until the end of your current billing period.

How do I restore my purchase?

If you purchased a subscription but it's not showing as active:

  1. Open Vault
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Tap "Restore Purchase"
  4. Sign in with your Apple ID if prompted

Which iOS devices are supported?

Vault requires iOS 15.0 or later. It works best on devices with Apple Neural Engine:

  • iPhone 8 and newer
  • iPad Air (3rd generation) and newer
  • iPad Pro (all models with Neural Engine)
  • iPad mini (5th generation) and newer

Newer devices (iPhone 12+, M1+ iPads) have significantly faster scanning.

Tokens & Subscriptions

What are tokens?

Tokens are the unit of work inside Vault. Each photo reviewed costs one photo token; each video analyzed costs one video token. You spend tokens to see the full results of a scan -- which specific photos were flagged, their thumbnails, confidence scores, and categories.

The free Demo scan always runs: it tells you exactly how many photos were flagged and the risk breakdown. Tokens unlock which photos those are.

What are the plans?

Demo (free, forever):

  • Full ONNX + Apple scan of your entire library
  • Exact count of flagged photos and risk breakdown by category
  • You know "247 photos flagged, 52 high-risk" -- but not which ones

Essentials -- $14.99/mo or $149.99/yr (2 months free):

  • Full scan results with thumbnails and confidence scores
  • Batch hide workflow (move flagged photos to iOS Hidden album)
  • 1,500 photo tokens per month (375 per week)

Bundle -- $19.99/mo or $199.99/yr (2 months free):

  • Everything in Essentials
  • Live Protection: background scan catches new sensitive photos the moment they arrive
  • Video analysis (frame-by-frame)
  • 3,000 photo tokens + 500 video tokens per month (750 photo / 125 video per week)

Founding Member? If you subscribed before v1.1.0, your original price is locked for as long as you stay subscribed. Read the Vault Pledge.

Can I buy tokens without subscribing?

Yes. Pay-as-you-go packs are available at any time:

  • Peek ($2.99, one-time, non-consumable) -- reveals your top 4 highest-risk detections. Buy once, it's yours permanently. No subscription needed.
  • Weekend Boost ($5.99) -- 1,000 photo tokens
  • Deep Clean ($24.99) -- 5,000 photo tokens
  • Video Pack ($7.99) -- 500 video tokens
  • Catch-Up packs ($49.99 / $99.99 / $149.99) -- 10k / 25k / 50k photo tokens for large libraries

Subscribers can also stack packs on top of their monthly tokens -- useful for a one-time backlog cleanup.

Turbo Start: A one-time 2,000-token pack ($9.99) is offered the moment you start a subscription. This is only available during signup and won't appear again.

What is the difference between Essentials and Bundle?

If you mainly need to review your existing library, Essentials is a great fit. If new photos arrive regularly and you want automatic protection as they arrive, Bundle is worth it -- it adds Live Protection (background scanning) and video analysis.

Do tokens expire?

  • Monthly subscription tokens -- unused tokens carry over as long as your subscription is active. They expire if you cancel and don't resubscribe within the grace period.
  • Pay-as-you-go packs -- no expiry while you have an active subscription. If your subscription lapses, standalone tokens remain usable for 90 days.
  • Peek -- a one-time non-consumable unlock. Pay once, keep access. Restore on any device with the same Apple ID.

What happens if I cancel my subscription?

You get a 7-day grace period after cancellation. During those 7 days, you keep full review access. After the grace period, you revert to Demo mode: scans still run and give you accurate counts, but you can no longer see which specific photos are flagged -- until you resubscribe or purchase tokens separately.

Setting Up Photo Access

Vault needs permission to access your photo library to scan for sensitive content. For best results, grant "Full Access."

Your photos never leave your device. All AI scanning happens 100% on-device using Apple's Neural Engine. We have zero access to your photos.

Why "Full Access" is recommended

  • Limited Access: You manually select which photos the app can see. This makes scanning your whole library difficult.
  • Full Access (recommended): Vault can scan your entire library to find all potentially sensitive photos. Your photos stay on-device.
1

Open iOS Settings

Tap "Open Privacy Settings" in the Vault app, or open the Settings app manually.

2

Navigate to Vault

Scroll down and tap Vault in the list of apps.

Alternatively: Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > Vault

3

Tap Photos, then choose "Full Access"

Select Full Access to allow Vault to scan your entire photo library.

All scanning still happens on your device. Photos are never uploaded.

Settings path

Settings > Vault > Photos > Full Access

Fast Scanning Setup (SCA)

For the fastest scans, Vault can use Apple's Sensitive Content Analysis (SCA) as a prefilter before the full ONNX scan. See the Fast Scanning Setup guide for step-by-step instructions.

Troubleshooting

"Vault can't access my photos"

  1. Open Settings > Vault > Photos
  2. Make sure "Full Access" is selected
  3. If it's greyed out, try Settings > Privacy & Security > Photos > Vault
  4. Restart Vault after changing permissions

The app is slow

On-device AI processing speed depends on your iPhone model:

  • iPhone 12 and newer: ~200 ms per photo
  • iPhone 8-11: ~500-1000 ms per photo

Tips for better performance:

  • Close other apps to free up memory
  • Make sure your device isn't overheating
  • Keep your iPhone plugged in during large scans
  • Update to the latest version of Vault

"I denied permission accidentally"

No problem. You can change permissions at any time:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap Vault
  3. Tap Photos
  4. Select "Full Access"

"Vault is using a lot of storage"

When Vault scans your photo library, iOS creates a temporary cache of the photos it processes. This cache is managed by iOS itself -- not by Vault -- and is attributed to the app in Settings > iPhone Storage. This is normal behavior for any app that accesses your photo library.

  • Vault's actual data (database + model) is typically under 200 MB
  • The extra storage you see is iOS's system photo cache -- it counts against the app but is not your data
  • iOS automatically reclaims this cache when your device needs space
  • Your photos never leave your device -- this cache is purely local
  • Use the "Clear Photo Cache" button in Vault Settings to request iOS free this space immediately
